No matter (sigh). The only other option is not acceptable, so why not just embrace and celebrate 50? After all, half a century's a BIG deal!
I first got the idea of having a big celebration from my friend the Contessa, who, when asked who threw all her fabulous birthday parties, said, "Are you kidding ME.... I DO!"
And making lists.

Ridiculous, over-the-top ideas, including, but not limited to, tiaras, chandeliers and peacocks strolling in the backyard.
"Who throws their own birthday party, mom?" they said. "WE were going to do it!" they chorused. "You can't have a party in the BACKYARD!", they screeched.
I dug my heels in.
"My party, my rules," I said, "I'm fifty, I'm old enough now to plan my own party."
And I did.
It took about three months of planning.
Some of the work started months ahead. Planting flowers, building trellises,
I had dreams of dancing under the stars on the checkerboard as we were working on it. http://www.fadedvelvetshop.com/blog/diy-checkerboard-landscape
I bought the wine based on which ones had the prettiest labels! Or crowns!
Plus, the temperature was dropping. 58 degrees. Yikes!
Ugly, but necessary. Sigh. All the pretty landscaping...flowers, arches....hidden. No dreamy outdoor sitting areas. No outdoor chandeliers.
Someone may, or may not have, turned on the Ohio State football game..........................
This is not a great photo, but it's actually one of my favorites.
4 Cheese macaroni Supreme (people are still talking about this)
Green Beans with bacon
It was even BETTER than I dreamed it would be.
